I have several theories about designing spaces for children. First, I listen closely to the parents because they usually have very specific ideas about their children’s spaces. But after that I interpret it myself. I try to design gender neutral but if a mom wants a princess nursery for her first little girl them I’m not going to deny her. Next is I keep it simple. Kids accumulate so much that I don’t want them to have a busy space before any of the Stuff makes its way in.
I also have a theory that while we’re teaching children to be humans that we should teach them style. I use antiques. I use books, especially antique children’s books. I make sure things are durable but not indestructible. Kids need to learn how to take care of their spaces. They always need a soft place to play. Most importantly they need a main place for toys then several secondary places.
My interior design recipe combines all of that into calm peaceful thoughtful retreats for the favorite people in our lives.
